This mural art shows a naked prostitute during sexual intercourse. Supposedly, such images served as publicity and stimulation in the hallways of brothels.[1] In ancient Rome it was common for prostitutes to depilate their vulva and wear wigs or dye their hair blond. However, only men were allowed sexual satisfaction. While wifes were responsible for the procreation of children, prostitutes served as men‘s fulfilment of sexual gratification.[2] In this picture, the woman faces the observer head-on. She sits on the man who introduces his penis in her vagina. Although vulva and mons pubis are not depicted in exact detail, the scene is insistently erotic. The female organ is represented as a body part designed for men‘s gratification.[3]
