Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres The Turkish Bath 1863 Musée du Louvre, Paris, France |

Depiction in classicism painting is influenced by Antiquity and the Early Italian Renaissance era. This means that also the way of depicting the female genitalia has been imitated: neither pubic hair nor vulva slit were painted. This painting is in the shape of a tondo and allows the viewer to take a look through the keyhole into a bath where several female nudes are put together. The viewer slips into a voyeuristic role: she/he observes nude women abandoning themselves to sensuality. Sexuality and erotism obviously are symbolized by these women thus triggering male desire. The woman and her genitalia are depicted in an exaggerated and illusionary way.
