One of the principal themes in Sarah Lucas' artwork is the male gaze on the objectified woman represented in a disturbing, intense and at the same time humoristic way. She works with stereotypes depicting them with everday objects, very often with food. The woman on this picture has no identity, her genitals are placed in the focus. Following the Surrealist tradition the artist attached a chicken to the position of the vulva. The viewer gets clear very fast that the female genitalia are a metaphor of a cheap piece of flesh, consumed as a snack and then sorted out. The woman's body is under the strain of the mass media and society of looking delicate and appetizing for the man. The use of the term "chicken" for women in this context is significant.
