In the „Birth Project"series Chicago shows the different stades of a birth. Like for "The Dinner Party" she decided to use traditionally female material. She created needle works (i.a. with the help of skilled needleworkers ) and combined them partially with painting. She honors the woman as life giver, the vagina as the door into life. The process of giving birth in all its power is drastically shown, Chicago, however, does not omit the violence of birth the female body is exposed to.[1] The lines surrounding the woman are used to create drama and emphasize the energetic process. Birth scenes as well as the realistic depiction of the female vulva are rather rare in the European history of art. In the course of the history after the prehistoric Venus figurines and stone engravings, the veneration of the woman as life giver became increasingly less important.
