Depicting a goddess giving birth the artist refers to the neotlithic significance of the woman as life giver. The swede Sjöö was a dedicated feminist rebelling against patriarchy and the woman's image defined as per Christian tradition.[1] It was her intention to render visible the natural power of women, i.a. during birth, to honor women and to increase their importance. For the first time the painting was publicly shown in 1973 in the exhibition: "Five Woman Artists: Images of Womanpower" and provoked a huge scandal.[2] The artist was blamed for blasphemy and obscenity, she even was threatened of legal action.[3]
