Anal intercourse or anal sex is generally the insertion of the erect penis into a person's anus. It is a common practice for both homosexual and heterosexual partners. [1]

According to estimates, 50% of heterosexual people in Germany have had experiences with anal intercourse. [2] A US-survey (2006-2008) has shown that 36% of women and 44% of men have practiced anal intercourse at least once in a lifetime. [3]

Culture
In many religions and cultures anal intercourse is a taboo. Possible doubts are of hygienic nature or due to the fact that anal intercourse is considered a sex practice among homosexual men.

A healthy hygiene is important in all sexual practices but especially in anal intercourse. On the one hand, the anal tissues are delicate and on the other hand, natural intestinal germs can provoke irritations and diseases in the vagina. In many countries anal sex is still forbidden and a criminal offense. In Saudi Arabia, for example, a woman and a man having anal sex are sentenced to prison while two men face the death penalty. [2]

The anal region has an abundance of nerve endings and is highly sensitive. Hectic or demanding touch in this region can lead to a contraction of the sphincter muscles which facilitate pain during anal sex.
