Otto Mueller, an exponent of Expressionism, was a member of the artist group „Die Brücke" in Dresden. Expressionist painting is characterized by the expression and the sensations the artists felt while painting, and turns against the salon painting and the bourgeois way of life in general. Formally is featured a simplification of color and form; the vulva of the woman in the upper part of the painting is emphasized by the pubic triangle and the clearly defined vulva slit that reminds the viewer of the fragmentary engravings of "La Ferrassie" in Dordogne. Mueller, however, does not separate genitals and body; the main topic in his oeuvre is the unity of humans and nature.
