Anatomy and Function
The vagina, also called Yoni, can be described as a 10 cm long grooved tube. In the forward part, the walls are closer together and at the soft deep part, where the cervix bulges into the top of the vagina, they are further apart. [1] [2] [3]
The interior surface of the vagina is covered by a mucous membrane. Its makeup is regulated by estrogen. The healthy vagina of a woman needs Döderlein's bacilli which produce lactic acid in order to maintain an acidic pH, normally ranging between 3.5 and 4.5. It protects the vagina from germs. [1] [2]
Additionally, the vagina is encased by two muscular layers, with an outer layer of longitudinal muscle and an inner layer of circular muscle. [2]
Sexuality
During sexual arousal the vagina is supported by more blood. The increase of pressure in the vessels of the vaginal walls creates plasma and vaginal moisture. This process is called vaginal lubrication and differs from woman to woman, similar to the erection of men. [1]
The vagina is often described as little sensitive, at least in comparison to the clitoris. The two very erogenous zones in the vagina are the G-point and the A-point. [4] [POINTS OF INTERESTS]
Yoni Mapping ('Yoni' is the Sanskrit word for vagina, meaning 'sacred space') is a technique in sexual therapy and tantra which invites women to explore the most intimate and mysterious parts of their body. By touch and with the help of sex toys the "hot spots" are felt out in order to get to know better one's own orgasmic potential. [5]
Culture
The term vagina is mostly used as umbrella term for the female genitalia.[3] [PUSSY, CUNT & LOTUS]
An interesting myth deals with the dentate vagina which bites off the penis. According to Freud, this myth stands for the castration anxiety of man. [3]
