ASEXUALITY

Asexual people have no or hardly any urge for sexuality but most want relationships and closeness. Approximately one per cent of the population is asexual. [1] [2] [3]

The term was introduced by Alfred Kinsey in 1948. [HETEROSEXUALITY]. Since then other related forms such as demisexual have emerged. Demisexual people need a stronger emotional connection before they feel sexual desire. [1] [4]

Many asexual people wish for transparency and acceptance. For outsiders, the complete lack of sexual interest is often hard to imagine. In 1977, lacking intercourse during marriage was still grounds for divorce in Germany. In the case of divorce, the "refusal of matrimonial intercourse" could be avenged by means of maintenance costs or loss of claims. [2] [5] [6]

Expectations that sexuality has to be part of a romantic relationship put great pressure on asexual people. They see their desire for closeness fail because of a society that leaves little room for alternative forms of sexuality. [2] [5]
