Pansexuality refers to people who are attracted to others, despite of their gender. While bisexuals are only attracted to women or men, pansexual people include transgender and intersexual people. The gender of the sexual partner plays a minor part when it comes to their sexual desire. Another common used term is gender-blind. There are no exact statistics on pansexuality. [1]
The term pansexuality was coined by Sigmund Freud and was defined differently in 1917. Originally, the meaning of it was that the sexual drive plays an important role in all human behaviour patterns. [2] [3]
Otto Friedmann Kernberg, an American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst of Austrian origin explained pansexuality as undirected form of sexuality, which doesn't refer to a specific gender and is a disorder in the context of the borderline syndrome. According to him, sexuality without specific preferences and determination is a sign of an unsettled personality and regarded as "abnormal" human behaviour. [4]
Pansexual lovers overcome gender role barriers in their relationships and see the diversity beyond any norm.
[HETEROSEXUALITY] However, an identification doesn't determine the behaviour of people, no matter which sexual orientation they have. This means that a pansexual person can also live monogamously; only his/her freedom of choice who to love and desire is bigger. [5]
